Once, while serving time for fighting and fleeing an officer, Phil broke out of jail, entered his bike in a bike show, won the bike show, and broke back into jail before anyone discovered he was missing. Though Phil was tough—he was a certififed martial arts instructor—the Angels proved a tough foe. After multiple beating-induced emergency room visits, Mr. Cross decided that if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em, so he and most of his club brothers patched over to become the San Jose chapter of the Hells Angels.

The Illegal Gardener: The Greek Village Series (Volume 1)

A delightful glimpse into the lives of two very different people who became friends and were both better for it. A rare friendship that changed their lives and may change yours a bit too.

There is great depth and honestly in Ms. Alexi's portrayal of the diverse characters in The Illegal Gardener. The novel expertly interweaves the lives of an English woman with the residents in the small Greek village she impulsively moves to. After leaving her home and children she becomes part of not only the village community but also forever changes the life of a stoic, insightful young refugee from Pakistan. Ms. Alexi's realistic account of village life - as well as the difficulties faced by both the residents and the many illegal refugees in Greece - is done with a compassionate understanding of cultural and individual differences. The author brings a guileless candor and realism to her well-developed characters' epiphanies about love, family and friendship while avoiding the banal and formulaic.

This was a very enjoyable story. It's a story of 2 people who have a solid friendship - it was just that, a friendship. The historical aspect was interesting and the author showed how difficult life was for some at that time. But the main characters were able to overcome the obstacles and it was a very real story. It is written very well, even with the few grammatical errors. The ending was unpredictable & a great end to a great story.

The beginning was reminiscent of Under the Tuscan Sun (movie version) but the story takes you on a journey of an unlikely friendship that crosses the barriers of culture, gender, geography and status. However, their is one common denominator that forms a bond that heals and endures. If you want to learn how to be a more authentic friend while being delightfully entertained, this is the book for you.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

This is simply the most superb book I've ever read. Beautifully written, gut-wrenching, clever, inventive, and imaginative. Oskar is the most lovable and loving character I've discovered in ages -- the pain and anger and imagination and confusion and passion are beautiful and charming and enthralling and always entirely real. The story here is secondary though also essential -- Foer seems to be able to keep us engaged throughout, locked to Oskar's quest and his discoveries, but what's of course always most important is the emotions of his characters. It's about flaws and the crippling strain of trauma and the gap between imagination and reality. It's really a beautiful book, and, perhaps despite appearances, one entirely without pretense. Really superb stuff. Easily the most deeply moving book I've ever read. I recommend it without even the slightest hesitation.

Martha Conway's first novel, 12 BLISS STREET, was nominated for an Edgar Award, and her short fiction has been published in The Iowa Review, The Carolina Quarterly, The Massachusetts Review, Folio, Epoch, and other journals. She has taught creative writing at UC Berkeley Extension and Stanford University's Online Writer's Studio, and is a recipient of a California Arts Council Fellowship for Creative Writing. Born and raised in northern Ohio, Martha is one of seven sisters. She now makes her home in San Francisco.

She doesn't pull punches and it is an honest portrayal of what she endured and how she coped (or not). Difficult to put down. Would thoroughly recommend this book.

This book really delves deeper into the relationship between Shannon and Declan as they get to know each other better... like a lot better.
